The Society runs a number of projects with the objects of investigating changes in environmental conditions, improving the environment in and around Lake Vänern and disseminating knowledge about the lake. Here are details of one of the major project in which we're involved, though we also participate in other ones, including the EU's Big Lakes project:
Vegetation project
The Lake Vänern Society for Water Conservation wants to investigate changes in the vegetation in the lake's bays and archipelagos. Shore vegetation has increased in many of these areas, most notably in the case of the common reed. Many of the skerries are also becoming overgrown with bushes, and this increase in vegetation has resulted in the disappearance of a lot of bare rocks and islets that used to be the haunt of birds. This project includes an investigation to ascertain how extensive the changes in vegetation have been, why they have taken place, and what measures need to be taken to reduce vegetation again in the long term. The project was begun in 1999, and a report on the first half of it is due in autumn 2000.
